ORRIN HUDSON AWARDED THE 2004 PRESIDENT'S AWARD
Orrin Hudson is a nationally recognized chess champion. His work has appeared on CNN, USA Today, Fox News, TBS Superstation and hundreds of local media organizations. He has dedicated countless hours to the design and implementation of the programs he launched through his non-profit organization, Be Someone, Inc. Orrin felt compelled to act and started this crime prevention program in 2001 after hearing about a young man who robbed and murdered several people in a Wendy's Restaurant in Queens, New York. As a veteran Alabama State Trooper, he knew he had to get to the grassroots of the problem.
Be Someone, Inc is more than a crime prevention program. Orrin mentors students and teaches them life mastery skills through the game of chess. A father of four children, he understands how to motivate and instill a sense of pride in his students. They graduate his course with renewed self-esteem, a positive mental attitude and the desire to become a contributing member of society. Family members of his students report improvement in their grades, social conduct and mental acuity skills.
Growing up with thirteen siblings in a housing project in Alabama gave Orrin a first-hand look at what crime and poverty does to the personality of a child. He learned survival skills on the streets of the inner city where crime was taken for granted. Because of the vision and insight of a caring teacher, Orrin learned to look beyond his negative and degrading circumstances. He learned to Be Someone special, and that is what he passes on to his students.
He has dedicated his life to helping others. Having depleted his personal resources and finances, he continues to find innovative ways to keep his doors open and his programs running. To date, he has touched the lives of more than 15,000 students in over 30 school in five states.
Sensitive and intelligent, Orrin is a graduate of the Dale Carnegie Success School and a member of the National Speaker's Association, Georgia Speakers Association, United Chess Federation, Atlanta Chamber of Commerce and Dekalb Chamber of Commerce. He is a dynamic motivational speaker and mesmerizing instructor. Whether he is teaching life mastery skills to youngsters, or ways to prevent Alzheimer's Disease to the elderly, Orrin's love for the game of chess explodes in enthusiasm and comedy.
